The Earth Day Flag

The original Earth Day Flag was designed by John McConnell in 1970. Mr. McConnell is also the Earth Day founder.

The Earth Flag represents a common interest among the people on Earth, that we all share a valuable but limited resource, the Earth itself.

The design for the flag was based on the first pictures of Earth taken from the Apollo 10 space mission. It is a simple but beautiful design. It shows what a fragile object our wonderful planet is, and that we must do all we can to take care of our Earth. After seeing the Apollo 10 photograph of Earth in Life Magazine in 1969, Mr. McConnell said “As a people, we became more aware of our planet, its relation to our solar system and to the universe...”

Today, the Earth Flag is still waved with pride all around the world.
