John McConnell

Earth Day Founder and Pioneer

Mr. John McConnell, is the original founder and pioneer of Earth Day, and a noted peace activist. He has devoted his life to trying to relieve human suffering and promote peace on Earth. It is said that Mr. McConnell has "demonstrated passion for peace, religion and science throughout his life.

John McConnell was born on March 22, 1915 in Davis City, Iowa (United States). His earliest interest in our planet Earth was in 1939 when he was working at a plastics factory. While there, he realized how much the manufacturing of plastic damaged and polluted the Earth, and from there his concern for ecology grew. At this time of in history, it was rare to find a person so devoted to the environment. Mr. McConnell has been a valuable asset to our planet ever since.

However, it was in the 1960's that the United States as a whole began a new era of green peace and environmental concern. During this time, John McConnells desire to conserve the environment grew even stronger.

It was in 1969, at the National UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, where John McConnell felt compelled to propose a day in which we celebrate our Earth's life and beauty. Mr. McConnell not only intended a celebration, but an awareness of the need for preservation and renewal of the fragile resource upon which all life on Earth depends. Earth Day was born.
